# Lekha Washington says police bruised her and Zayn Marie during Mumbai detention

Actor Lekha Washington has alleged that uniformed personnel grabbed her and actor Zayn Marie, leaving both of them bruised, when they were detained along with her partner Imran Khan at Mumbai's August Kranti Maidan on October 10.

In a detailed Instagram post, Lekha said the group, which also included Imran's mother Nuzhat, walked to the venue at around 5 pm to ask about friends who had been taken into custody. No gathering was under way when they arrived, she wrote. Police had barricaded the area on all sides, and a large crowd of media personnel closed in on Imran.

According to her, Imran told reporters they had no demands and belonged to no organisation. Loud, nonstop whistle-blowing cut him off before he could finish. The group was then forced into a vehicle, driven around for a couple of hours and later stopped from taking public transport. Much of that drive, she added, was spent stuck in traffic.

Speaking to the media before he was detained, Imran said he had come as a resident of the city. He wanted to understand why freedom of movement was being restricted and why people's voices were being suppressed.

Lekha also accepted that the three of them are privileged and that others face far worse. She called the Mumbai Police "a beacon of balance" in her own experience. On Saturday night she posted a video saying they were safe, then an Instagram Story of herself hugging Imran and Zayn at home.

The detention has also drawn a political response. BJP leader Kirit Somaiya wrote to the Mumbai Police describing Imran, an Overseas Citizen of India cardholder, as a foreign citizen. He alleged that joining a protest held without permission broke OCI and visa conditions, and he demanded the actor's deportation. The demonstration backed the Cockroach Janata Party's call for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
