Filmmaker Kiran Rao wants to remake the South Korean series Reply 1988 for Indian audiences. She named it as her favourite K-drama while appearing on the podcast The Popcorn Hour.

"Best K-drama is a show called Reply 1988. It's a fantastic show. It's actually set in 1988. In fact, that's something I would love to remake," she said.

The young friends are at the centre of the story, but she was drawn most to the grown-ups around them. "The genuine jewel of this show is the older women, the mothers, and the fathers. They are just so good," Kiran said. She praised the way the show tells the story of families living side by side in a close neighbourhood.

She also linked Seoul to Kolkata. "It's set in a para, as they call it, a neighbourhood in Seoul in 1988. In fact, in Kolkata also you call it para only," she pointed out.

Reply 1988 came out in 2015. Shin Won Ho directed the 20-episode slice-of-life drama and Lee Woo Jung wrote it. It is set in Seoul's Ssangmun-dong neighbourhood.

On screen, a group of children grow up together through their teenage years, friendships and first love. Their parents get full stories of their own, with worries and everyday struggles that sit right next to the kids' tales.
