> Actor Imran Khan was detained by Mumbai Police at August Kranti Maidan on October 10, the planned venue for a protest backing the Cockroach Janta Party, and shared a selfie from the police van.

Actor Imran Khan was detained by the Mumbai Police on Saturday, October 10, at August Kranti Maidan, the ground chosen for a protest in support of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). He kept things light on Instagram, posting a selfie from inside the police van with the caption, "Apparently I'm going for a drive."

Speaking to the media, Imran said he had no demands and had come only as a citizen who lives in the city. "I am here to see why freedom of movement is being restricted. Why are people's voices being suppressed?" he said. He added that he does not belong to any organisation.

Mumbai Police said no one had asked for permission to hold the protest. Even if someone had, the police said, they could not have allowed it there, because Bombay High Court directions permit protests only at Azad Maidan. CJP workers disputed this and said they had emailed the police for permission but never got a reply.

The party wants Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to step down over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. In Delhi, police also detained protesters who were trying to reach Jantar Mantar for the party's demonstration.

Imran has spoken up on social media before. When students protesting education reform faced an alleged lathi charge, he wrote, "Something broke in me today," and said the system meant to protect those students had failed them.

Several film names criticised the crackdown, Prakash Raj among them. "You have not arrested our voice! You have arrested yourself," the actor said in a video he posted. Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap and singer Vishal Dadlani also took to Instagram to speak against the police action.
