> Tom Cruise's Digger reportedly made only $1.2 million from North American Thursday previews, while Anne Hathaway's Verity earned $4.5 million and is tracking for a much bigger opening weekend.

Tom Cruise's Digger has made a weak start in North America, while the Colleen Hoover adaptation Verity looks set to rule the weekend. Digger reportedly earned just $1.2 million from its Thursday previews. That is below the preview totals of The Creator at $1.6 million and Mickey 17 at $2.5 million. Verity, led by Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, is said to have pulled in $4.5 million from its own previews.

The outlook for Digger has slipped even further. Reports say the film is now tracking for an opening of $9 million to $12 million, which would be Cruise's lowest debut in more than a decade. It would also reportedly hand WB its biggest flop since Joker 2. Critics have been harsh, praising its bold visual style but feeling that many of its jokes never land.

Viewer reactions online are split. Some fans on Twitter called it gripping and full of twists, and hailed Cruise for a fully committed turn. Others found it too scattered to make its point, with one viewer ranking it below Bardo, while still crediting Cruise and John Goodman for keeping it afloat.

Directed, co-written and co-produced by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Digger casts Cruise as Digger Rockwell, an ageing oil baron whose drilling venture sets off a global disaster that he must then fix. The cast also includes John Goodman, Riz Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons and Emma D'Arcy.

Verity, meanwhile, is reportedly on course for a $35 million to $40 million three-day start in North America and $50 million to $60 million worldwide. That would be Hathaway's third biggest opening of the year, behind The Odyssey and The Devil Wears Prada 2. Its preview haul beats Reminders of Him at $1.9 million and Regretting You at $1 million, though it trails It Ends with Us at $7 million. Despite poor reviews, the erotic thriller, which also stars Josh Hartnett, appears to be gaining from Digger's weak reception.
