> The Bombay High Court has turned down Phantom Studios' plea to halt Kangana Ranaut's Queen Full Power, finding at first sight that it shares no story, plot or theme with the 2014 film Queen.

The Bombay High Court has declined to halt Kangana Ranaut's upcoming film Queen Full Power, ruling that at first sight it has nothing in common with her 2014 hit Queen.

Justice Sandeep Marne passed the order on Wednesday, and it was made public on Friday. After comparing the synopses of both films, the judge found no shared story, plot or theme. The new film does not carry Queen's story forward, so it is not a sequel. Nor is it a prequel, spin-off or reboot.

Phantom Studios went to court in July. The production house said a deal signed when Queen was made gave both sides an equal 50 per cent share in any future sequel or prequel, and that it had never agreed to any follow-up or adaptation. It wanted the release blocked and claimed Rs 250 crore in damages. The film's producers argued that Queen Full Power is a fresh and original story.

Genre was a key difference for the judge. Queen was a romance, while the new film is a comic thriller built around a kidnapping. Its lead is a middle-aged Marathi woman whose ordinary middle-class life in Mumbai is thrown off course by a kidnapping. Her story shows no trip beyond the city through which she finds independence or confidence.

An argument that the shared word "Queen" would confuse audiences also failed. Many films use the word in their titles, the judge noted, and it remains a descriptive term of praise whose everyday meaning has not changed because of the 2014 film's success.

With the interim application dismissed, nothing bars the film from being made, released or promoted while the main suit goes on.
